AI Assistance Juror

Overview

This project integrates AI and Vision Pro to enhance jury selection, case comprehension, and courtroom efficiency. AI assists lawyers in analyzing cases and selecting jurors, while Vision Pro helps jurors visualize evidence and legal details. A digital system streamlines device management and jury voting, making trials smarter and more efficient.

Research

There are people on the Internet who think the jury is wasting its time, and people who get subpoenas issued by the court in error. But there are also people who like to go to trial because they can learn about American law and get paid for it.

Interview

Joy Wang

Lawyer

Base: California

No, because both sides each have several opportunities to strike a particular juror without cause.

Only the judge has to stand in the middle, make a fair judgment and level the playing field. The defendant and the plaintiff are on opposite sides, and the lawyers on both sides are ADVOCATES, both of them have to listen to their CLIENT and defend their CLIENT's interests, so of course they are all going to pick the one that is favorable to them. There is no need for them to pretend to be impartial. They are not judges and have no obligation to be impartial

How do you go about selecting jurors?

Q&A

I'll go for people who are favorable to me to be on my jury, who can more or less boost my vote count.

So each attorney chooses to favor his or her own juror, so how does one remain impartial?

So you won't show justice in front of the people?

I don't want the jury to take up too much of my time because I have work and family responsibilities. Time is precious to me, and if the process drags on too long, it will disrupt my life schedule and may even affect my income. Additionally, since I am not familiar with court procedures, I would be concerned that I might feel stressed or upset if the process was too complicated or delayed for too long. Therefore, I would want to complete this obligation as soon as possible and return to my normal life.

When you received the subpoena, did you have any thoughts?

Q&A

When I receive a subpoena, I may feel nervous and uneasy. As an ordinary citizen, I am not too familiar with court procedures, so I may worry whether this will affect my work and life. However, I do understand that this is a civic duty required by law, so although I am a bit worried, I will try my best to cooperate and attend the court hearing on time. Inwardly, I still hope that the process can be concluded as soon as possible, and I do not want it to take up too much time or bring more trouble.

Why you don't want it to take up too much time?

Lack of specialized knowledge

Jury members are usually ordinary citizens who lack legal and professional knowledge. When dealing with complex technical or highly specialized cases, they may not be able to fully understand and evaluate the relevant evidence, resulting in the quality and accuracy of the verdict being compromised.

Factors affecting impartiality

The composition of a jury may be influenced by the selection strategy of the lawyers, i.e. “legal selection”, which may sometimes lead to uniformity or bias in the jury members. In addition, a jury's decision may be influenced by emotion, media influence or social bias, rather than being based purely on the law and evidence.

Time consumption

Holding a trial usually takes a lot more time for both attorneys and jurors to prepare, and a long trial can lead to more disgruntled jurors

Usability Test

I invited two groups of people to do usability testing and told them what they needed to accomplish to see if they could interact as I expected them to do to accomplish the tasks I gave them

Group 1: Learn about the circumstances of the crash and information about the scene

Testers were able to easily find the information page by following the prompts on the home page, and quickly find the information they were looking for on the information page.

Group 2: You are the defense attorney and you want to help your witnesses plead not guilty, select the jurors in your favor

The tester was able to select juror information based on the page guide, but did not find jurors quickly enough to find jurors that were favorable to him or her because he or she did not know the case well. When asked after the test how easy it was to obtain the information, the tester indicated that the information could be obtained quickly.

What next

Will AI itself be fair and impartial? AI itself is calculated from big data, but big data can't be guaranteed to be completely impartial, and if the data it receives is inherently biased, how does it go about ensuring its impartiality? Do big data preferences affect the AI's decisions? To ensure neutrality, is it necessary to clean up the historical records to ensure its fairness.

User Experience Complexity Some users (especially jurors) may find high-tech solutions uncomfortable or difficult to maneuver, affecting their effectiveness. Increased Guidance

High Development and Maintenance Costs High-precision AI models and 3D modeling may require ongoing investment of resources, which poses a challenge to initial profitability. Model libraries are common across the country, and in some places manual labor can be assisted As the number of users grows, servers and cloud computing resources may need to be upgraded, increasing long-term costs.

Because vision pro is expensive to build, it may exacerbate inequalities in the justice system if only economically advanced regions or large law firms can afford such high-tech tools. Speak ui is adaptively adjusted so that it can be used in several different devices.
